About Us
Unique nursery; unique plants
We're one of those now-rare nurseries that grows its own plants from scratch and has an expert on site who knows and loves them all. Our selection reflects the broad, idiosyncratic, and naturalistically focused tastes of owner Russell Stafford. Here you'll find many rare and outstanding perennials and other ornamental plants not offered elsewhere in the region, including the area's largest selection of native plant species (contrary to claims made elsewhere). You'll find quite a few plants (including natives) that are virtually exclusive to us.
We grow our plants organically and mostly from seed (often local seed). We DON'T resell non-organic plants from wholesalers, as is the general practice these days. Our plants sometimes cost a bit more than the mass-produced items found elsewhere, but we and our customers think they're well worth it.
Inside our cozy cottage-like shop, you'll find plant-related art and accessories featuring local makers, as well as a selection of offbeat houseplants. Please stop by 1 Alfred Stone Road sometime soon -- we'd be delighted to share the plant love!
Unique natives
Among our unmatched selection of native perennials is this rare dwarf selection of great lobelia, Lobelia siphilitica 'Mistassinica'. We propagate and grow it organically here at Homegrown, just like most everything else we offer.
